  1. I believe that the 16 year old shouldn't be let off the chain for the crime he committed. Not only did he kill 4 pedestrians, but also stole 2 cases of beer and he's under the influence. I don't think it is right for kids to get away with anything just because they were raised the wrong way or there families are more wealthy than others. I think this kid should be punished in some sort of way.

  2. My opinion on this article is that the teenage from Texas that killed four pedestrians because he was driving under the influence of alcohol. The parents of the teenager are trying to get him out of the charges because driving while drunk is not a recognized diagnosis. The teenager named Ethan Couch sentenced 10 years of probation for the fatal accident. A lot of people are mad about what he got sentenced because he should go to jail for what he did. Which is completely correct because if you are driving drunk and you end up killing someone… it is no one’s fault besides the person who decided to go behind the wheel and kill someone because of their stupid choices? The fact that he could go off and take other people with him while he was driving drunk and put other people’s lives in jeopardy, he deserves many years of jail time because obviously he is not smart enough and he is stupid enough to go out and do that.

  3. Personally, I find that this guy should be held accountable for the charges. It isn't fair if he gets out of it just because he's wealthy. I understand that he had a rough childhood, but other people have had rough childhoods too. If everybody without the best childhood ever went around committing crimes, then our country would be in ruins. Everybody would just use that excuse to get out of trouble even if it wasn't true. Nobody would ever get in trouble with the law. These decisions should be based on the crime that was committed, not what race the person is or what their social status is. We better pull ourselves together before something worse happens. If he gets away with it, then others will undoubtedly too. If they don’t, then they will complain about favoritism. People will begin to take advantage of the system, and our country will become overrun by crime.

  4. Very first reaction to this is plain and simple, Money talks, and money rules the world. I personally hate things like this, and it enrages me that this spoiled child gets off the hook for ending a human beings life while he was breaking the law. It’s hard to get over how enraging this is to be honest. Within the article, I saw nothing of the parents seeking disciplinary against their child, take away his car, the money, do something.
This to me is what causes more crime. The outraged relatives of those families, who lost a loved one, may seek vengeance on not only that child and his family, but the judge himself for letting that happen. I know this is an exaggeration but, the movie Law Abiding Citizen is an example of what I mean. People do crazy things when they lose love ones and then the criminals have no justice that seeks to smite them.

  5. Affluenza, is the stupidest thing I have ever heard in my life. Saying that a child doesn’t know any better only makes sense to a certain extent. It doesn’t really have anything to do with money. Sometimes, kids will simply be kids and make stupid mistakes. Driving with a BAC triple the legal limit, is just stupid. The teen in question clearly knew he was too intoxicated to drive, and he made a poor decision that he should be punished for. He took the lives of four people. The teen just getting away like that will just continue to make this kid feel untouchable. This child’s parents need to step in also. If a parent is not ready to raise a child, and instill proper values and morals in that child, then they shouldn’t have a kid. I blame the parents just as much as the teen. They probably bought him that truck, and he knows nothing about the value of money. It’s absolutely ridiculous, and needs to be changed.

  6. In my opinion this kid should be sentenced for killing those 4 people. If it was a middle class or lower class child they would be in trouble right away. This kid should be punished and not protected by a disease. This kid chose to drink and drive. His decision ended in heartbreak and there should be consequences.

  7. I don’t think that it’s right that a teenager is exempt from punishment because his family is rich. If this was the case in every murder, there wouldn’t be a lot of justice for the family of the deceased. This shows that it’s okay to kill someone if you have money, which isn’t okay at all. If wealthy teenagers did this everywhere, there would be chaos throughout the country. If a teenager killed someone (or multiple people) that’s murder, whether or not they have a large amount of money in their family. I think that this teenager should be punished for what he did to these people. When the writer of the article mentions how the different backgrounds result in different punishments, I think that it’s true. If a poor person that lives in a bad neighborhood was in the same situation, they would actually be punished unlike the teenager in the article. I don’t think that this ruling provides justice for the family of the people he killed.

In all honesty I could write an essay on just how wrong this is. Not only should that kid be put in prison, but he should rot too. The fact that the judge of the case, who most likely has children who are more fortunate than most, gave the sixteen year old only ten years of probation.
Not only did Ethan’s parents do nothing to reprimand their child who was driving while intoxicated and drinking underage, but the judge did not either. Not to mention the fact that four innocent people were killed. I think we all realize that if Ethan was the one that was killed on the sidewalk by somebody who was not rich; the parents would have sued the person for every dime they owned, not to mention putting the culprit behind bars for life.
Imagine if that was four Ethan’s that were killed by a single middle to lower class teenager that had done nothing differently than Ethan Couch did when he killed those people. There would be serious hell to pay.
A ten month probation for a crime that is worth in the laws eyes, twenty years of jail time is absolutely, outrageously despicable and does wonders to project what society we actually live in. In my personal opinion Ethan Couch should serve a lifetime in prison.
A parent’s protection should only go so far when it comes to their child. I know that if it were my son or daughter that was killed I would make sure that the person who did it was behind bars and if it were my child that killed those people I would be dragging them by the ear into their jail cell myself.
Nobody should be above the law just because of the size of their wallet. Our country is ‘equal’ everyone is ‘equal’ but that is just the biggest load of BS I have ever heard.

  9. I think that the young kid should be sentenced to life. There is no excuse for driving under the influence and killing four people. Of course it was a mistake, but that doesn't mean the kid should only recieve a slap on the wrist for doing what he did. This article just proves that this world is controlled by money. People now a days think that money will get them out of everything, but in reality it won't. So this kid's parents throw money in the situation to save his butt, but I highly doubt this guy won't have remorse or guilt for doing what he has done. In my opinion he deserves a way worse punishment than what he got, this just shows how sad and pathetic society can get.

The idea of Affluenza is something that shouldn't even exist. Basically, it's saying that rich children can get away with something just because they had a "rough childhood." Your past or upbringing shouldn't force you to drink and drive. That makes no sense. Honestly, it's just a stupid excuse for someone to get out of something that they know was wrong. If he can't face what he did, that's his own fault. He shouldn't have committed the crime in the first place if he was too cowardly to accept the consequences. Teenagers these days think they're invincible and that their mom and dad can get them out of trouble all the time, but when it comes to legal issues, that isn't always the case.
